COUNCILOR Paolo Nicolo Gaane, chair of the City Council committee on health, nutrition, and health insurance, has expressed commendation for Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, following the enactment of an ordinance institutionalizing Newborn Screening (NBS) within the city.
The ordinance aims to ensure that every newborn in Cagayan de Oro City receives comprehensive screening for various congenital conditions.
Councilor Gaane lauded the vice mayor for her leadership and dedication in advancing the legislation.
“This ordinance is a significant milestone for our city’s health program. It not only protects our most vulnerable—our newborn—but also demonstrates our commitment to a healthier future,” said the councilor.
As the author of the ordinance, Vice Mayor Bebot, in a statement, expressed gratitude to the council and all stakeholders involved in the legislation’s passage.
“NBS is a responsibility of the parents and public health practitioners. The City Health Officer will lead this program.
They must establish a functional case management referral system with other hospitals, ensuring the provision of all NBS services nga atong ihatag dinhi sa atong dakbayan,” she emphasized.
She is optimistic that this ordinance will lead to increased awareness and participation among new parents in the screening process. “This ordinance is making newborn screening a permanent, strong part of our city health services,” she opined.
The legislation was co-authored by Councilor Gaane and Councilor Maximo T. Rodriguez III. (JBD/SP)

THE city government of Cagayan de Oro is set to develop two new socialized housing projects for residents.
This initiative follows the recent approval of the City Council, headed by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, of the Preliminary Subdivision Development Plan (PSDP) of Cagayan de Oro Resettlement & Socialized Housing Projects 5A and Phase 3 Extension (CDORSHP 1 P3 Extn) located in Barangay San Simon and Canitoan.
The socialized housing projects cover an area of 12,273 square meters, containing 91 lots in San Simon, and 19,818 square meters with 64 lots in Canitoan.
The approval, however, is subject to a set of conditions imposed by the City Engineer's Office, the City Planning and Development Office, and the City Housing and Urban Development Department (CHUDD).
The projects aim to address the growing demand for affordable housing and improve the living conditions of residents.
The two PSDPs were reviewed and endorsed by the committees on subdivision, housing development, landed estate, and on laws and rules chaired by Councilor Edgar S. Cabanlas. (JBD/SP)
