CITY Councilor Paolo Nicolo Gaane, chair of the City Council committee on health, graces the 2026 International AIDS Candlelight Memorial held on May 17, Sunday, at Limketkai Center.
The annual event honored the lives lost to AIDS while paying tribute to the survivors who continue to fight against the stigma associated with the disease.
The candlelight memorial was also attended by community members, City Health Office headed by Dr. Rachel Dilla, Department of Health (DOH), healthcare professionals, and advocacy groups, all united in remembrance and support.
It may be recalled that the 21st City Council enacted the Cagayan de Oro HIV and AIDS ordinance which aims to strengthen the protection of rights for individuals living with the virus.
It also seeks to ensure access to healthcare, education, and social services while promoting awareness and sensitivity.
Councilor Gaane said that the city remains committed to upholding the rights of those affected by the virus and recognize the importance of ensuring equitable access to healthcare while also fostering a community free from stigma and discrimination.
“Each candle lit symbolized remembrance hope and unity and a shared responsibility to build a more compassionate and stigma-free Cagayan de Oro,” said Councilor Gaane. (JBD/SP)
Councilor Jing Daba, chairperson of the City Council education committee, reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to educational opportunities for the welfare of students during the Division Federation of Parents-Teachers Association and Stakeholders’ Convergence held on May 15, 2026, at the DepEd Division Office Function Hall.
Joining the gathering were education stakeholders who supported the goal to strengthen collaboration and align initiatives that will advance education and community development.
The event underscored the vital role of partnerships among schools, parents, and community partners in addressing learners’ needs and promoting programs that foster holistic community growth.
Also in attendance was Councilor Gilda O. Go, representing the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Inc., who supported the call for cooperation and unified efforts to improve educational services for the youth and the community. (JAO/SP)
