DRAWING from her personal experience as a former City Councilor, Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez during the inaugural session of the 21st City Council emphasized the importance of fulfilling one’s duties as a legislator.

“I was never given a committee for three years—not even as a vice-chair,” VM Bebot said. “But I worked hard despite not having a committee… and I’ve proven that I can be a leader of Cagayan de Oro City.”
Her remarks came in response to a motion from the minority bloc to be granted chairmanships in the new council. While acknowledging the democratic principle that the majority leads, she emphasized the vital role of the minority in maintaining accountability and balance.
“Whether you're a chairman, vice-chairman, or simply a member, what matters is how you fulfill your duties as a legislator,” she added.
VM Bebot stressed that effective governance depends not just on leadership positions but on a robust system of checks and balances upheld by all council members. (JDOpema/SP)
