To ensure a more holistic and inclusive approach, Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez proposed the inclusion of the committee on education in the joint committee discussions, to address the needs of children with autism.

This came in response to a special report delivered by Councilor Des Dahino which called for making Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment, diagnosis, and intervention services more accessible and affordable for Kagay-anon families.

Rodriguez commended Dahino for bringing attention to the issue, stressing that autism requires urgent and coordinated action from various agencies, particularly within the education sector.

As a licensed Physical Therapist, he shared key insights on autism, noting that early recognition and intervention are crucial.

He explained that autism manifests in different ways, with some individuals demonstrating exceptional intelligence while others experience significant developmental delays.

Given the wide spectrum, Rodriguez emphasized the need for tailored interventions and support services to help individuals with ASD reach their full potential.

He expressed hope that the City Council can review the budget to prioritize programs and facilities for persons with disabilities and special needs, especially indigent families who may not be able to afford specialized care.

As chairperson of the committee on social services, Rodriguez affirmed his support for convening a joint committee meeting as soon as possible, with the goal of expanding services and establishing more schools or centers dedicated to children with special needs in the city. (JDO/SP)
