Councilor Girlie Balaba proposed a resolution to adopt an official invocation song, written by national artist from Bukidnon, Datu Rodelio “Waway” Saway, for use in formal government affairs of the city.
The said composition, commissioned by Mayor Rolando Uy himself, would promote values of unity, guidance, peace, and responsibility beyond politics and personal interests, Balaba said.
But according to Majority Floor Leader Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, prayer is a personal act and that different religions observe different forms of worship.
Councilor Abaday concurred with the statement of the majority leader, saying that the government must remain religiously neutral.
For her part, Councilor Yevonna Yacine Emano acknowledged the good intention and quality of the composition but cautioned that the religious diversity should be carefully considered.
The City Council suggested that the proposal be further deliberated at the committee level. (FDC/SP)
