COUNCILOR Imee Rose P. Moreno, on Monday, raised reservation on the proposed construction of a fish landing facility in Barangay Bonbon, citing concerns about the area’s high susceptibility to flooding per Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) report.
Moreno expressed concern about the potential risks associated with the construction of infrastructure in areas prone to natural disasters, stressing the need to clarify whether it is appropriate to proceed with the development.
In response, Majority Floor Leader Councilor Edgar S. Cabanlas defended the proposed construction, citing that proper engineering practices could significantly mitigate flood risks.
“That can be corrected (through) the engineering work. Depende nana sa atong pag-construct, and I think there was already a study on this. It doesn’t mean nga dili nana sila ma-utilize,” he stressed.
Cabanlas outlined several engineering solutions that could be employed to enhance the site’s resistance to flooding.
While acknowledging the benefits that a new fish landing facility could bring to the community, Councilor Moreno said the protection of the environment must come first.
“I am not objecting (to) this, kay nakita man nako nga naa’y letter from DENR. I just want to make sure maka-prepare ta for any (negative eventualities) we can avoid,” she concluded. (JBD/SP)
