Lim backs call to terminate contract of sanitary landfill contractor

Councilor Yan Lam S. Lim supported the call to terminate the contract of the current sanitary landfill contractor in Barangay Pagalungan.

His remarks came following the special report delivered by Councilor Eric D. Salcedo, during the 13th regular session of the 20th City Council, presided over by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, regarding the deteriorating condition of the city’s sanitary landfill.

Councilor Lim underscored that while garbage collection is a routine task, the true challenge lies in the effective management of the landfill.

“Collecting garbage from the community is the easiest part of the job. The real challenge lies in the managing of the landfill,” Lim stated, explaining that garbage pickup simply involves transporting wastes from households or communities to a disposal site.

Lim shared that during his visit to the landfill, he observed a reduction in the number of equipment used by the contractor, expressing concern over the apparent inefficiency.

“I hate to say this but I hope this is not a sabotage to portray the new hauling contractor as inefficient,” he said.

Lim clarified that the new hauling contractor has been gradually addressing the garbage problem in the city, but pointed out that the landfill itself remains “grossly mismanaged.”

In support of Councilor Salcedo’s call, Lim urged the cancellation of the existing contract for breach of agreement.

“Let the management of the landfill be given to a contractor who can promise effective and efficient service,” he stressed.

The matter was referred to the committee on environment for appropriate action, investigation, and recommendation. (JAO/SP)
