THE City Government of Cagayan de Oro City officially launched the month-long Higalaay Festival 2025 on August 8 with a grand opening program at the Rio de Oro Boulevard, honoring its patron saint, Señor San Agustin.
Vice Mayor Rodriguez, in her welcome remarks, gave thanks to Sr. San Agustin for the blessings of good health of every Kagay-anon family and peace in the community. She also emphasized the gift of long-standing friendship that ties Kagay-anons together.

Following her message was the ceremonial wearing of friendship bands, during which Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy and Congressman Rufus Rodriguez put on the bands for each other, while Vice Mayor Bebot did the same with Barangay Carmen Chair Rainier Joaquin “Kikang” Uy.
Another highlight of the grand launching was the unveiling of a giant puzzle which symbolically marked the start of the festival activities, with the dignitaries of the city local government and Higalaay event coordinators putting the pieces together.

Prominent figures from both the city and the province also took part, including Misamis Oriental Governor Juliette Uy, Congressman Maxie Rodriguez, former Congresswoman Malou and Department of Tourism-Regional Director Elaine Marie Unchuan.

Meanwhile, in his keynote address, Mayor Uy called on Kagay-anons to take part in the festival’s activities, emphasizing the spirit of panaghiusa (unity) and pagtinabangay (cooperation).
He also thanked the Higalaay Fiesta Executive Committee and emphasized the relevance of the Diamond Jubilee theme: “Proud of our roots. Bold in our dreams.”

Reflecting on the city’s 75-year journey, Uy urged residents to look back with gratitude on both triumphs and setbacks, and to continue striving for peace, progress, and shared aspirations.
The mayor also announced that this year’s celebration will feature 56 events, including 12 core, 9 major, 10 minor, 8 special, and 17 parallel activities.
Capping the opening rites was a fireworks display that lit up the city skyline, followed by the much-anticipated Higalaay Music Festival, featuring local acts and the crowd-favorite Oh! Caraga during their album launch.
As the festivities continue throughout August, the Higalaay Festival Committee invites locals and visitors to witness and experience why Cagayan de Oro remains home to #TheFriendliestFestival in the country. (FDC/SP/Photo credits: OVM)
