The Committee on Laws & Rules favorably acted on the application of Bukidnon Hydro Energy Corporation for the passage of a resolution interposing no objection to its Bulanog-Batang Hydroelectric Power Project.

During the committee meeting presided by Councilor Edgar S. Cabanlas, the project was presented as a 33.9-megawatt run-of-river (ROR) renewable energy facility located in Barangay Besigan, Cagayan de Oro City, and Barangay Sto. Niño, Talakag, Bukidnon.

Addressing concerns regarding the possible drying up of the Cagayan de Oro River, the corporation assured the committee that the project would waste no water.

Instead, river water will only be diverted through the facility and subsequently returned to its natural channel. The corporation further emphasized that the project has undergone public consultations and secured the necessary endorsements and clearances, including barangay resolutions, position papers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC).

The City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) likewise expressed support for the project based on its evaluation, citing its environmental benefits.  According to CLENRO, the hydropower facility is expected to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lessening dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Councilor Agapito Suan manifested his objection to the proposed project. (JDO/SP)
