Barangays mandated to name consumers welfare officer
An ordinance requiring each and every Barangay Council in the City of Cagayan de Oro to designate a Consumer Welfare Officer to cater to the needs of the barangay constituents with respect to their rights and obligations as consumers was approved by the 18th City Council during its 69th Regular Session on Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy.
Section 2 of the ordinance provides that the Barangay Consumer Welfare Officer shall keep himself/herself abreast and updated on laws and regulations pertaining to the rights and obligations of consumers; closely coordinate with other government agencies and offices whose functions revolve around the promotion of consumer welfare such as DTI, the City Price Coordinating Council, NFA, the City Agricultural Productivity Office, and other offices, in order to ensure a vital and active link between the consumers in the barangays and the government; to propose to the Punong Barangay and the Barangay Council such programs and activities aimed at promoting consumer welfare in the barangay; and to perform such functions as maybe delegated to him by the Punong Barangay or Barangay Council.
The said ordinance was reviewed and endorsed by the committees on trade and commerce and on laws and rules, chaired by Councilors George Goking and Ian Mark Nacaya, respectively. (EF)
