Seeking to address the city's long-standing need for a permanent judicial complex, Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez urged the immediate implementation and construction of the proposed new Hall of Justice in Barangay Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City.
In his special report during the 41st Regular Session, Rodriguez stressed that the city has been without a permanent Hall of Justice for eleven years since the previous facility was destroyed by fire.
At present, the city's courts operate from a leased building along Masterson Avenue in Upper Carmen, which continues to face challenges related to inadequate facilities, limited space, and security concerns. These issues affect judges, court personnel, lawyers, litigants, and members of the public.
Rodriguez also noted that significant efforts have already been undertaken to advance the project. During the 18th and 19th Congresses, 2nd District Congressman Rufus B. Rodriguez filed legislative measures seeking the allocation of ₱2 Billion for the construction of a new Hall of Justice in Cagayan de Oro.
According to Rodriguez, it is no longer fitting for a highly urbanized city like Cagayan de Oro to remain without a modern and dignified Hall of Justice. He added that the construction of a new Hall of Justice would improve court operations, strengthen security measures, protect litigants' privacy and promote a more efficient, accessible, and responsive justice system for all Kagay-anons.
In view of this, Rodriguez appealed to his fellow council members to support a resolution urging the Supreme Court of the Philippines to immediately commence the implementation and construction of the Hall of Justice in Barangay Indahag. The 21st City Council subsequently approved the measure, signaling its unified support for the long-awaited judicial infrastructure project. (JDO/SP)
