Gaane warns public against leptospirosis amid rainy season

CITY Councilor Paolo Nicolo Gaane urged residents to take precautions against leptospirosis as the rainy season heightens risk of infection from floodwaters and contaminated environments.

Gaane, chair of the committee on health, emphasized the advisory of the Department of Health, which reminded the public to be vigilant as leptospirosis is transmitted not only through rat urine but also through the urine of other infected animals that contaminate soil and water.

“Leptospirosis is preventable. We must all work together, protect our home, keep our surroundings clean, and seek care early if we develop symptoms,” he said.

Symptoms of leptospirosis can range from mild flu-like illness to severe complications such as kidney damage, liver failure, or meningitis.

To reduce the risk of infection, Councilor Gaane and health officials recommended the following measures: avoid swimming and submerging in contaminated water or flood water, wear protective footwear and gloves when cleaning up after floods, drink only clean water, ensure proper waste disposal, maintain cleanliness of house and surroundings, and wash with clean water the exposed areas of body to contaminated water or flood water.

“Protect yourself and your family against the threat of leptospirosis. Prevention is a shared responsibility. Simple precautions can save lives,” said Councilor Gaane. (JBD/SP/Photos by CIO/DOH)
