Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez called for enhanced ventilation and stricter sanitation measures in the city’s public markets, particularly ensuring quality control of meat and fish products.
He raised these concerns in relation to the special report of Councilor Edgar Cabanlas on the financial status and ongoing activities of the city’s public markets.
Cabanlas reported that the City Government has already turned over wastewater treatment facilities to the Cogon and Carmen Markets and is planning to establish a similar facility for the Westbound Market in Barangay Bulua to further strengthen sanitation efforts.
He added they are currently seeking donors of industrial fans, as the government’s procurement process may cause delays for immediate acquisition. Meanwhile, thorough ventilation clearing has already been conducted in several market areas.
Cabanlas assured that improvements to the city’s public markets have been included in next year’s budget.
As chairperson of the committee on consumer protection, Rodriguez expressed his full support for the City Government’s initiatives to enhance public market facilities, emphasizing that proper ventilation, sanitation, and regular inspections are vital in maintaining public health and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for both vendors and consumers.
