Rodriguez: Family support crucial to safer schools

"This is very alarming, and we have to go back to the basic foundation of the family."

This was the statement of Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez as he urged parents to take a more active role in guiding and monitoring their children amid the growing influence of social media, violent online content, and other digital platforms on today's youth.

Rodriguez made the statement following the special report of Councilor Imee Moreno on a video circulating online that allegedly contained threats against several public secondary schools in Cagayan de Oro City. The incident raised concerns among parents and heightened fear among students, prompting calls for immediate action.

Rodriguez linked the incident to his previous special report urging stakeholders to implement coordinated programs addressing school-based violence following the tragic mass shooting in Tacloban City. He said the recent incident warrants legislative attention and should serve as a wake-up call to strengthen preventive measures before a crisis occurs.

He called for closer coordination among the authorities and concerned departments. Likewise, he urged the continuous review of school safety and emergency response protocols, stressing that every threat must be taken seriously and addressed promptly.

A joint committee meeting of the committee on education and the committee on peace and order is scheduled on August 5 to discuss possible legislative measures and further strengthen school safety policies. (JDO/SP)
