City to implement SCoPSA project in Brgy Pagalungan

THE implementation of the Sloping Corn Production in Sloping Areas (SCOPSA) in Barangay Pagalungan is in the offing.

The 18th City Council during its regular session Monday, June 24, presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy enacted an ordinance authorizing Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) and the Department of Agriculture-Regional Office X (DA-RFO-10) for the purpose.

SCoPSA is an approach geared to introduce land contouring technique to farmers in hilly or sloping lands, The Power learned.

The DA is implementing the project to enhance corn productivity by adopting sustainable adaptive technologies in sloping areas.

Under the MOA, the BSWM, DA-RFU and the city shall closely coordinate with each other to ensure that the establishment of SCoPSA model farms and other related activities are in accordance with the work and financial plan of the project.

The three parties agree to promote the project through massive information education campaign using tarpaulins, posters and the tri-media and to implement good agricultural practices in managing sloping areas cultivated to corn.

The Power learned that the technology will help lessen soil degradation which is evident on sloping areas usually occupied for corn production.

The ordinance was endorsed by the committees on agriculture and fisheries and on laws and rules chaired by Councilors Annie Dabaand Ian Mark Nacaya, respectively.
