SP approves Scholarship Code

THE City Council during its regular session on Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy approved the ordinance providing for the Scholarship Code of 2018.

Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba, the dynamic chairman of the committee on education and principal author of the ordinance said that the new scholarship code offers six types of scholarships. It was learned that the old ordinances cover only two types of scholarships.

The councilor said that because of the expansion and the big budget allocation, there is a need to create an office for the city scholarship program. She said the office will fall under the CSWD.

The councilor informed that in the workshops she attended together with the technical working group composed of CHED representative, Dep-Ed, different potential partner academic institutions, personalities from XU, USTP, and Lourdes college, the passing rates/ general average were differentiated – for the Performance Type, it is 85%, and for the Income-Based, 75%.

Councilor Suzette further explained that the amount to be given to the scholars and grantees cannot be fixed under the ordinance. She said that as provided under the Scholarship Code, the CSWD office will recommend as to how much should be given to the scholars to be approved by the scholarship board.

“As public servants, it is our duty and responsibility to give access to knowledge, and access to education,” Councilor Suzette compassionately expressed. (EF)
