Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez, chairperson of the Committee on Consumer Protection and a member of the Cagayan de Oro City Local Price Coordinating Council (CDO-CCPC), joined a meeting with local hog raisers and distributors of imported meat to discuss concerns about pork prices and consumer welfare.

During the discussion, local hog raisers proposed that locally produced pork be sold exclusively at Cogon Market, while imported meat would continue to be sold in other markets and supermarkets.

Distributors of imported meat considered the proposal but raised concerns based on their previous experience with a similar arrangement, noting that some market vendors continued to purchase imported meat and sell it outside Cogon Market.

To address the differing views, CDO-CCPC Co-Chairperson Atty. Egay Uy asked the parties to submit position papers outlining their concerns and proposals.

Rodriguez emphasized the need to consider all stakeholders in developing a practical solution that supports local producers while protecting consumers’ interests.

The position papers are expected to provide a clearer basis for assessing the proposal and its potential effects on local producers, meat distributors, market vendors, and consumers. (JDO/SP)
