Rodriguez asks LTFRB to consider local drivers for GSM taxi

Councilor Jonjon Rodriguez urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and concerned authorities to consider hiring local taxi drivers should Green GSM Taxis be allowed to operate in Cagayan de Oro.

During the 52nd regular session of the 21st City Council, Rodriguez asked whether the city legislature could recommend or require GSM operators to hire drivers from the city.

“We are for a green environment, but we are concerned with our drivers here in the city,” Rodriguez said, noting that local taxi drivers have raised concerns about their livelihood.

He also cited reports of Green GSM taxis picking up passengers in the city, including at malls.

LTFRB Assistant Regional Director Mohammad Hajam Sarip said around 300 GSM taxis have applied for authority to operate, with units reportedly intended for allocation to Cagayan de Oro by January. He also said the council can ask GSM operators to hire local drivers.

With this, Rodriguez requested the LTFRB’s participation in succeeding committee meetings for a more thorough discussion of the matter.

Currently, the green GSM taxis in the city are being used only for mapping and testing purposes, ARD Sarip clarified.

A meeting is scheduled on September 22 with GSM operators, Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy, cooperatives, the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA), and other concerned authorities to discuss the GSM taxi operation, including applicable caps and regulatory requirements. (JDO/SP)
