COUNCILOR Yevonna Yacine B. Emano is pushing for more pet-friendly spaces in Cagayan de Oro.

In her special report during the 8th regular session of the 21st City Council, she shared how her idea came from her observations during the recent fiesta celebration of St. Augustine, where pets were not only companions but also part of many families’ festivities.

“In recent years, the bond between humans and their pets has grown stronger, especially during the pandemic. Many families now consider their pets as part of their household, gani tawag nila ‘fur babies’,” Emano said.

The councilor further emphasized that creating pet-friendly establishments and public areas offer several benefits.

“They provide joy, security, emotional support, and even comfort for medical conditions,” she added.

Studies show that it encourages customers to stay longer, boosts tourism since many travelers bring pets with them, and supports community wellness by making people feel more at ease.

Emano also said it could pave the way for more responsible pet ownership policies under Republic Act 9482, including leashing pets, cleaning up after them, and ensuring only well-trained and domesticated animals are allowed in public spaces.

“By supporting pet-friendly establishments, we are not only promoting tourism and business, but also wellness and inclusivity,” she stressed.

Emano also cited the example of “TJ the Explorer,” a dog vlogger from Barangay Kauswagan promoting local events and establishments.

While TJ represents how pets can serve as city ambassadors, he is still restricted from certain areas like the Boulevard de Oro.

Hoping to change this, Emano called for further discussions with stakeholders, stressing that as the City of Golden Friendship, Cagayan de Oro should also extend its warmth to pets and their owners.

The matter has been referred to the committees on tourism, health, agriculture, and trade and commerce for appropriate action. (JAO/SP)
