Abaday on waste management: It starts at home

SOLVING the city’s waste problems requires more than government intervention. It demands active participation and discipline from households and barangays.

Councilor Roger Abaday has this to say in response to a special report delivered by Councilor Imee Moreno on the continuing garbage crisis of the city.

“Segregation should begin in the home,” Abaday said.

“Recyclables are the responsibility of the barangays, while non-reusable waste is where the city steps in. But we are seeing that right after the garbage is collected, people throw more waste again,” the environment committee chair further pointed out.

While Abaday acknowledged the validity of some concerns, he urged a more balanced perspective, citing ongoing efforts by a special task force composed of the City Engineering Office and private garbage collectors to address areas hounded by garbage accumulation from Lapasan to Bugo.

“We will strictly implement the 'No Segregation, No Collection' policy and meet with all concerned to discuss how this matter can be best resolved,” he added.

For Abaday, the growing concern about the city’s garbage issue demands collective accountability through behavioral change at the grassroots level. (FDCalotes/SP)
