Educ cmte backs construction of four-storey school bldg in Taguanao

THE request of the Barangay Council of Indahag for the allocation of funds for the construction of a four-storey building with 24 classrooms at Sitio Taguanao was deliberated by the City Council committee on education chaired by Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba during its meeting yesterday.

The representative of Taguanao Elementary School informed the committee that at present the school has 14 classrooms with 725 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

He said the school lacks classrooms for Grades 2 and 4, which made them resort to shifting classes. The first shift starts at 6:00 in the morning to 12 noon, and the second shift at 12:00 noon to 5:20 in the afternoon. Each class per shift holds an average of 50-60 students, The Power learned.

The representative also said that the existing classrooms are already old and have very limited space inside which makes it hard for the students to move easily.

While supporting the project, Councilor Magtajas-Daba said there is a need to know the lot size, its ownership and whether the school coordinated with the barangay captain.

Since the school representative said he has no knowledge about this, Councilor Suzette said the committee will continue discussions on the matter on August 31, 2017 at 3:00 in the afternoon.

The councilor said a representative of the City Engineers Office, the punong barangay of Indahag, a representative from the Department of Education (DepEd), and the school principal of Taguanao Elementary School will be invited to attend the scheduled meeting.
