SP authorizes fixed gross sales of business tax renewal for 2022

DUE to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 19th City Council headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy enacted an ordinance fixing the gross sales or receipts assessment of all business establishments in Cagayan de Oro City for 2022 based on the 2021 business license renewal assessment of gross sales.

The ordinance cited that with the government-imposed restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, many establishments in the city experienced financial difficulties due to slow business operations.

Section 16 of the Local Government Code of 1991 provides that every local government unit shall exercise the power expressly granted, those necessarily implied therefrom as well as powers necessary, appropriate or incidental for its efficient and effective government, and those which are essential to the promotion of the general welfare.

Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya, one of the ordinance authors, said if implemented by the city treasurer, there would be no increase or adjusted rates in business taxes for this year.

It may be recalled that legislators also enacted an ordinance extending the deadline of the period of the renewal of business permit license from January 20, 2022 to February 28, 2022.

Councilor George S. Goking, chair of the committee on trade and commerce, and all majority members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod are the authors of the said ordinance.
