Dahino bats for safety audit inspections of malls, buildings

Councilor Edna M. Dahino is strongly pushing for the conduct of fire safety audit inspections of malls and other buildings in the city.

The councilor made this recommendation in her special report last Monday during the 69th Regular Session of the 18th City Council presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, citing two consecutive fire incidents that took place in the cities of Davao and Cebu last December 2017.

The councilor stressed the urgent and pressing need to find out how safe shopping malls are in our city recognizing its importance not only to many workers but also to many others who consider malls as their place of recreation and to pass away the time.

The councilor also pointed out that the place should be safe for business purposes since most Business Process Outsourcings (BPOs) are also located in the malls.

“In the interest of safety of our Kagay-anons, I strongly recommend that we conduct fire safety audit inspections of our malls in the city, see if Fire Code is strictly implemented and to ascertain whether the Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS) of our workers in the malls are adequately met and enforced, that similar incidents like these can be avoided in our city.”

This matter was referred to the committee on police, fire and public safety chaired by Councilor Romeo V. Calizo for appropriate action. (JAO)
